Superior courts are the trial courts of the California state court system. They hear both civil and criminal cases.
DOWNTOWN SUPERIOR COURTHOUSE
The Downtown Superior Courthouse hears civil, probate, and small claims cases. Civil cases include cases about contracts, damage to property, or someone getting hurt. Probate cases are cases where an individual is taking care of their personal affairs, such as wills, adoption, or guardianship. Small claims cases are civil cases worth $5,000 or less where the parties represent themselves.

FAMILY JUSTICE CENTER COURTHOUSE
The Family Justice Courthouse hears family law, juvenile dependency, and drug court cases. It is also home to the Self Help Center. Family law cases include divorce, child support, and child custody cases. Juvenile dependency cases include child neglect and child abuse.

CALIFORNIA APPELLATE COURTHOUSE

SIXTH DISTRICT COURT OF APPEAL
The Sixth District Court of Appeal decides appeals from final judgments and rulings of the superior courts from the counties of San Clara, San Benito, Santa Cruz, and Monterey. It rules on criminal and civil appeals.

UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA
United States district courts are the trial courts of the U.S. federal court system. The Robert F. Peckham Federal Building is the Northern District of California courthouse located in San Jose. The courthouse hears both civil and criminal federal cases. The court specializes in patent law and intellectual property cases.
